The crisis unfolded after a door plug panel detached from an Alaska Airlines flight departing from Portland, Oregon, setting off a chain of events that rocked Boeing to its core. Subsequent investigations led to a management overhaul within Boeing, with US regulators imposing restrictions on its production lines, resulting in a significant drop in deliveries for the company.

During the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, alarming revelations surfaced regarding missing records related to the panel incident and broader production worries surrounding two Boeing widebody jets. Testimonies from key figures like Boeing engineer Sam Salehpour and Ed Pierson from the Foundation for Aviation Safety shed light on the gravity of the situation.

Former Boeing engineer Ed Pierson’s disclosure of internal records to the FBI, received from a whistleblower, added another dimension to the unfolding drama. Pierson’s cooperation with authorities aimed to provide critical information regarding the door plug panel mishap.

Whistleblower Sam Salehpour, a quality engineer at Boeing, reiterated his concerns about the safety practices at the company, alleging that he was marginalized when he raised red flags about the widebody jets’ safety standards. Salehpour’s transfer from the 787 to the 777 program following his safety queries added to the suspicions lingering around Boeing’s operations.
