Chaos Unleashed: Loose Barges Strike Pittsburgh's Ohio River

More than two dozen barges went on a wild escapade in Pittsburgh recently, drifting down the Ohio River in a way that could only be described as ‘uncontrolled.’ The chaos began around 11:25 p.m. on a Friday night when 26 barges made a daring escape from a facility near Peggy’s Harbor, a marina situated on the northern bank of the Ohio River, as confirmed by Eyobe Mills, a spokesperson for the U.S. Coast Guard.

Out of the 26 runaway barges, 23 were heavily loaded with dry cargo like coal, while the remaining three were empty. Luckily, there were no casualties or environmental pollution reported. However, Peggy’s Harbor was left reeling from ‘extensive damage,’ according to officials.

The situation took a dramatic turn as eleven barges got wedged against the river bank near Brunot Island, while the remaining fourteen embarked on a journey downstream. Six of these adventurous barges even braved the Emsworth Dam. The aftermath? Well, it sparked a temporary halt for both bridge and rail traffic, causing quite a stir in the city.

By the time it was Saturday afternoon, almost all the rogue vessels had been located, except for one missing barge that kept authorities on their toes. Efforts to track down the elusive barge are underway as officials gear up for a thorough investigation.

Responding to this maritime mayhem, Campbell Transportation Company, the proud owner of these spirited barges, remained silent in the face of inquiries. However, in a statement to KDKA, the company highlighted the challenging conditions that led to the incident. Their explanation pointed to the high water levels and strong currents brought on by flooding in the region as contributing factors to the unexpected breakout.

Eyobe Mills, shedding light on the ongoing situation, emphasized the dynamic nature of the event, stating that the scenario was constantly evolving with new developments unfolding by the minute.

This escapade of the barges serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of nature and the need for vigilance in maritime operations. As Pittsburgh strives to recover from this event, it’s become a tale of both caution and resilience in the face of unexpected challenges on the Ohio River.
