Breaking: Mint Butterfield Found, Kidnapping Charges Loom

The missing teen, Mint Butterfield, who is the child of Slack’s co-founder, was located in San Francisco on Saturday night in a concerning situation. Mint, a 16-year-old nonbinary individual, disappeared from their home in Bolinas but was fortunately found safe with an adult man, Christopher “Kio” Dizefalo, who is now facing kidnapping charges.

The Marin County Sheriff’s Office revealed that Dizefalo, described as an “adult friend,” was apprehended and taken into custody on suspicion of child abduction and other violations. He was swiftly detained in Marin County Jail with a bail set at $50,000.

Mint Butterfield, last seen on April 21, was discovered inside Dizefalo’s white van in San Francisco’s Tenderloin District. Despite the alarming situation, Mint was unharmed, bringing relief to their worried loved ones.

The incident unfolded after Mint was reported missing by their mother, prompting a search that led authorities to discover the teen with Dizefalo. Fortunately, Mint was found unscathed, although the circumstances raised questions about the involvement of the adult friend in the teen’s disappearance.

Mint, who had previously expressed thoughts of self-harm, was classified as “at-risk,” further heightening concerns about their well-being during the period they were missing.

Authorities indicated that Mint and Dizefalo had voluntarily absconded from Bolinas; however, suspicions emerged regarding Dizefalo’s possible role in influencing the teen’s decision to leave home. Mint’s parents, Stewart Butterfield and Caterina Fake, expressed gratitude to the investigators for their efforts in reuniting the family.

Stewart Butterfield, co-founder of Slack Technologies Inc., alongside Caterina Fake, co-founder of Flickr, acknowledged the swift action of law enforcement and the community in locating Mint. The family extended heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in the search and emphasized the importance of awareness around the risks faced by teenagers in vulnerable situations.

The teenager had reportedly left a note for their parents hinting at their intention to run away before being discovered with Dizefalo. Law enforcement confirmed Mint’s familiarity with the Tenderloin area, indicating a previous connection that led them back to the neighborhood during their time away from home.

The situation serves as a reminder of the complexity and dangers of vulnerable individuals being influenced by others, highlighting the importance of swift action and community support in ensuring the safety and well-being of at-risk youth.
